Poems and Phantasms

“Infantry of the Line, Inspection in the rooms” Édouard Detaille, 1885 (Public Domain)

What are their names,

those boys

in uniforms

in pictures

in museums

because they told each other

I’ll never forget you

so someone must remember

forever words

through the silence, sounding

out of fields and stones

pounding hearts into dust

staining clothes with promises

and things to take back home are left

behind the velvet ropes

the messages unsent

still binding
