Poems and Phantasms

Six of One

“The Farmer’s Wife and the Raven” George Stubbs, 1786 (Public Domain)

What if you only have the one basket

and the eggs are about to turn

then you run faster

down that road, the less travelled one of course

because nothing can be over easy

sure enough, the basket breaks

as you scramble through the narrow gate

feeling cross, no, boiling with anger

and cracking jokes

just aren’t funny

now there is nothing left but to

carry the golden prize

messier by the minute

filling your arms with determination

because there never was

another choice
