Little Returns

Putting in moments of

parenting,  gains and losses

add up

The hours of chauffeuring

picking up and dropping off, rush

and wait, items left behind

Teaching them to help, playing

a long game, banking

against efficiency

Measuring days by

teeth lost, shoe size

and how quickly

they grow

This is it, childhood’s prime time

the real estate of life

Success, luxury, vanity, none

compare to the blessing

of kissing good night

my child, safe

For the richest memories, sweet

and surprising, the confidences told

between stories, you

had to invest

the time

Summer Silence by Lurana Brown

Many thanks to the Blue Hour for publishing my poem!

The Blue Hour

there are days, summer days
when the fear quiets down enough to hear
creatures humming out of stillness

the sun does not burn through
the dancing leaves shadow
and the air is generous

there is no ticking in these moments
marked by meaning
thick with remembering

between the fireflies, a different darkness

“Vanitas” Michael Conrad Hirt, circa 1630 (Public Domain)

Fossilized footprints, books

Placing my self inside another’s imprints

Close enough to touch the marks

the writer left

in time

Connect with creature through created

One-way mirror, darkened back

One either sees

or is

reflected

From the forests, page by page

The words are thrown into the sea

Wanderers find that they were seeking

kinship bottled, opened

keening
